The Cosmic Mass

A Ritual of Reverence, Rhythm, and Renewal

Ritual Lab’s Cosmic Mass is a ceremonial gathering for the spiritually attuned, the earth-rooted, Inspired by Matthew Fox’s Creation Spirituality, Joanna Macy’s Great Turning, and the wisdom teachings of The StarHouse in Boulder, Colorado, this event is a rhythm-infused, heart-centered ritual for our times.

We gather in sacred circle, not to worship, but to remember: ourselves, each other, the more-than-human world. This is ceremony for those who love the Earth and know that grief and joy live side by side. The Cosmic Mass is not affiliated with any religion or doctrine. In this context, the word Mass simply means a gathering—a coming together of people in sacred intention to honor the body, the Earth, and the spirit of life itself through ritual, movement, and communal presence.

A Flow Through the Four Paths

Each Cosmic Mass is guided by the fourfold rhythm of the spiritual journey, grounded in the wheel of the year and the turning of the seasons:

  • Via Positiva – We begin in awe and gratitude, attuning to the intricate interconnections of the Cosmos.

  • Via Negativa – We move into silence and grief, honoring what is broken, lost, or dying.

  • Via Creativa – We embody renewal through movement, ecstatic dance, or another creative practice.

  • Via Transformativa – We close by orienting toward justice, community resilience, and action.

Elements of the Experience

Guardian Puppets & Sacred Masks crafted by Druid Priest Magnus de Rhuddlan hold presence at the thresholds, animating the ceremonial space with mythic gravity and playful protection.

A live four-piece percussion ensemble, Rhythm Tribe, conjures a soundscape that moves us through trance, tenderness, and transformation.

A rotating cast of guest presenters—teachers, artists, visionaries—keeps the content alive, diverse, and timely.

We root in seasonal awareness, shaping each gathering to reflect the energy of the earth's current turning.

Matthew Fox, radical theologian and popularizer of Creation Spirituality, was inspired in 1992 to begin holding his own series of “Techno Cosmic Masses” in Oakland, CA.

These events were designed to connect people to a more ecstatic and visceral celebration and relationship with ritual and community building.
